Choose what the text can show
Ask how a reply prompts an explanation or supplies one, rather than whether it successfully taught programming. Start with https://api.redditcommentsapi.com/v1/comments?subreddit=learnprogramming&limit=3 and save the actual response. A small limit is a reading exercise, not a way to request three connected turns. An empty result cannot tell you whether learners elsewhere asked that question.
Inventory the missing premise
For each passage, note whether the problem statement, attempted code, error message and expected behavior are actually visible. They are reading questions, not required record fields. Separate a quoted snippet from your own reformatted version. Do not run retrieved code merely to make the annotation seem complete, and do not turn a plausible missing question into a quotation from the learner.
Join records only with evidence
Preserve the flat records and inspect whether parent_id and link_id actually appear. When available, parent_id describes the referenced parent relationship and link_id connects to a post context; neither is an author identifier. Check the returned identifier formats before joining records. Do not strip prefixes blindly or assume every relationship value is automatically suitable as an /v1/item identifier.
Create a local lookup using observed record identifiers. Connect a child to an observed parent only when the available identifiers support that match. If the referenced parent is missing, retain the reference and label the connection unresolved. Grouping by an available link_id can organize a local view, but shared post context does not establish a direct reply relationship or a complete chain.
Name the instructional move, then justify it
Possible local categories include asking for an attempt, isolating a failing step, explaining a concept and supplying a counterexample. Attach a short passage that warrants the category. A suggested test is not evidence that the learner ran it; thanks or agreement alone does not demonstrate mastery. Permit multiple roles and an uncertain label when irony, quotation or absent context prevents a confident reading.
Check the effect of your selection
If you narrow later requests, q searches title and text. Dates from and to use YYYY-MM-DD in UTC and filter content creation, created_utc; the whole final to day is included. min_score is a threshold, not a ranking of good explanations. A filter can omit the parent you need. Neither _doc order nor nearby rows establish conversational sequence. Limits of 100 records per request and 100 pages per query do not guarantee complete recovery.
Hand over the fragment and the unresolved questions
Show original text, supported links, local annotations and missing-context markers together. Keep disagreements between readers visible until the evidence resolves them. Report what the received material supports, not outcomes for all learners. This independent, nonofficial historical archive is neither live nor exhaustive or guaranteed immutable. Documentation explains item lookup and filters; Pricing explains requests and retries. A known-item lookup does not recursively retrieve descendants, and parent_id or link_id are not query filters.
