Three comments are not necessarily one exchange

A short reply can contain code without explaining which problem it addresses. It may be a hint, a counterexample, or a request for the learner to show their attempt. Reddit Comments API gives conversation analysis teams a way to inspect those distinctions in archived comments instead of treating every snippet as a ready-made solution.

Begin with https://api.redditcommentsapi.com/v1/comments?subreddit=learnprogramming&limit=3. subreddit selects learnprogramming and limit requests at most three comments, possibly fewer or none. These are individual records, not a selected thread. The service is an independent historical archive, unaffiliated with Reddit, and does not provide a live stream of new questions.

Separate the explanation from the missing premise

Read what the comment actually says before assigning it a teaching role. Does it explain a concept, ask for an error message, propose a small experiment, or simply agree with someone else? These are possible local labels, not claimed contents of the example response. Preserve the exact wording that supports a label. If the task, earlier code or expected output is absent, mark that premise missing rather than inventing a beginner’s mistake.

Code in a comment is source material to inspect, not a command to execute or a verified fix. A contrast between two snippets may illustrate reasoning without recommending either one for production. Keep the author’s explanation beside the snippet so a reader can distinguish what was said from your assessment of its instructional value.

Connect only the pieces that are present

The API returns flat records. Optional parent_id and link_id values can support a local relationship view, but a shared post reference does not prove that two comments directly answer each other. Retain an unresolved reference when the related record is absent. A gap is useful evidence about what cannot yet be interpreted; it is not permission to complete the conversation yourself.

Deliver an annotated fragment, with an honest boundary

A useful handoff shows the received passage, any supported connection, your teaching-role annotation and the context still needed. It can help a team choose material for closer reading or refine questions for a study. It cannot by itself establish that a learner understood the explanation, that a proposed fix worked or that the sample represents all programming help.

The guide develops this reading process; Documentation covers filters and bounded _doc ordering. A successful request costs one credit even when empty, at $1 per 1000 successes. Pricing explains the collection budget. Save the responses used for your annotations: later queries need not return identical records, and reaching a page limit does not establish complete discussion coverage.
